MALAYSIA 2003
“We had a small
group this year which resulted, I think, in us doing better than we ever have
previously in finding the secretive forest species. Of course much of this was due to Dennis’s uncanny sensitivity in
not only knowing all of the calls, but knowing exactly where a secretive species
might appear. Time and time again we
were rewarded with his persistence and his quiet patience.
Our tour started
in the afternoon on the Old Gombak Road.
There in roadside forest we had a nice variety of birds including
Black-thighed Falconet, Red-billed Malkoha, Gold-whiskered Barbet and stunning
prolonged views of a Black-and-Yellow Broadbill. Several thermaling groups of Oriental Honey-Buzzards were already
migrating north along the mountain spine. The next morning we were out well
before dawn for our trip to the coast.
There at Kuala Selangor Nature Park we managed to clean up on the
mangrove specialties which included Mangrove Blue Flycatcher, Mangrove Whistler
and eventually prolonged scope views of the skulking Mangrove Pitta,
distinctive with its bright blue wings, brown crown, and oversize bill. Other notable species there included the
stunningly marked Black Baza, a Little Bronze-Cuckoo, several stunning
Ruby-cheeked Sunbirds, and for some, a female Yellow-rumped Flycatcher. All too soon the heat was overwhelming and
after lunch we headed towards Fraser’s Hill.
Along the way we stopped at Hulu Yam Lama where we eventually found the
distinctive and local White-headed Munia.
Also there were several Pin-tailed Snipe which gave us good views on the
ground before flying off uttering their rather high-pitched flight notes. A pair of Blue-breasted Quail were a
surprise.
Arriving at
Fraser’s Hill is always a relief and it is no surprise that the English sought
out this hilltop as a retreat. The
climate there was just about perfect and the birding was excellent. Highlights here included Fire-tufted and
Black-browed Barbets, the beautiful Blue Nuthatch, a Red-bearded Bee-eater, a
very cooperative Silver-breasted Broadbill as well as a pair of Long-tailed
Broadbills, and a variety of woodpeckers which included Banded and Bay as well
as Greater and Lesser Yellownape.
Palearctic migrants included several Mugimaki Flycatchers and Tiger
Shrikes. In the interior of the forest
along a trail we managed to get close studies of the striking Rufous-browed
Flycatcher. Our dusk and nocturnal
birding produced both Malaysian Eared and Grey Nightjars and eventually a
confiding and majestic Brown Wood-Owl.
One of the real surprises along the road up to Fraser’s Hill were a pair
of White-crowned Hornbills that Dennis was able to hoot up into a rather open
tree allowing for good scope studies.
This is one of the hardest Asian hornbills to find.
After three
pleasant days at Fraser’s Hill we headed down the hill and wound east towards
Taman Negara. We stopped at a fruiting
tree which was full of birds. Most were
bulbuls, including many Scaly-breasted Bulbuls, probably the most stunning
member of that family. We also had
several of the majestic Rhinoceros Hornbill and a few of us managed to see a Yellow-crowned
Barbet.
After lunch and
a three-hour boat trip we arrived at Taman Negara for a five-night stay. It is hard to come up with all of the highlights
there, but we saw many secretive species that are normally very difficult
to see. These include five species
of pittas including the Garnet, which only Dennis saw. None of us saw all of the pittas, but most
saw at least one species. The calling
Giant Pittas were certainly a surprise. Dennis
has encountered this species previously here on only two occasions and this
is having spent many thousands of hours at Taman Negara.
Although views were brief I was reminded of a bright blue volleyball
bouncing down the trail. Other highlights at Taman Negara included our
old friend, the Masked Finfoot, perhaps the same individual which now has
spent over 20 winters here, several parties of Crested Partridges, also now
known as the Roulroul, several parties of Crested Firebacks and a single Malayan
Peacock-Pheasant, an excellent variety of woodpeckers including White-bellied
and a very territorial pair of the striking Olive-backed, a male Black-and-White
Bulbul (always scarce) and scope views of the normally secretive Large Wren-Babbler.
In the forest we encountered a group of noisy (grunting!) Large Green
Pigeons feeding in a fruiting tree. It
was near this location where we had one of the best finds of our trip, a pair
of the secretive and stunning Malaysian Rail-Babbler. Dennis was able to whistle them in and they
approached on the ground on foot, cocking their tails and giving “tuck” call
notes when close. Eventually all were
able to see at least one of the birds, which was fortunate in view of my ill-timed
cough which chased it off the log!
Every time afield
in Taman Negara we encountered something new, and no doubt this could have
continued for weeks, but all too soon it was time to head back down river and
back to Kuala Lumpur for the next section of the tour, the state of Sabah on
Borneo.” By Jon Dunn.
