BRAZIL 2002:  The Parks of Minas Gerais State

"Brazil once again lived up to expectations. The 2002 tour was our fourth to a country that never disappoints birders. The tour was filled with daily, hourly and minute-by-minute bird sightings, each seeming to rival the previous one. Adding to this birding extravaganza was our immersion into the Brazilian culture including the unmatched friendliness and enthusiasm of the people we encountered along the way, the Brazilian food with all of us succumbing to the multitude of fresh fruits and vegetables and enticing desserts, and increased awareness of the great diversity of this vast country.

 

Our travels to three different parks in Minas Gerais State did not disappoint us. From the 3:30 a.m. sighting of Maned Wolf by two insomniacs to our views of Swallow-tailed Cotingas, we squeezed every minute possible into birding and mammal watching at scenic Caraça before our departure for the long drive to Canastra. The Brazilian Merganser led us on a merry chase for one-and-a-half days while offering opportunities to have close encounters with a Brasilia Tapaculo, Cock-tailed Tyrants, and Ochre-breasted Pipits before finally, after many hours of diligently searching the Rio São Francisco, two mergansers treated us to a fly-by and later perched views. These sightings were rivaled only by the Giant Anteaters wandering through the grasslands and the dusk sighting of a Maned Wolf for those of us who had slept through the night at Caraça. Our discomfort from dust and road construction noise at Cipo National Park were rewarded with sightings of the four sought-for endemics although the all-too-brief appearance of Cipo Canastero made us all glad we had had our daily injection of Brazilian coffee prior to birding in order to be quick on the uptake before the canastero disappeared from sight among the rocks. The Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl with its contingent of irate hummingbirds and tanagers provided a wonderful birding feast for our final moments of birding in this tremendous country.”  Judy Davis.
