VENEZUELA : Andes, Llanos
& Henri Pittier National Park 2002
“Our tour started in the Andes with a good afternoon visit to Sierra Nevada National Park where we were introduced to the diverse avifauna of the tropical Andean forests – from White-capped Dippers to Black-capped Tanagers. On the west slope the next day Golden-headed and Crested Quetzals vied for our attention, while flocks of multicoloured tanagers flashed overhead leaving us all a little dazzled and bemused. The high paramo revealed almost all its avian specialities to us this year, with the endemic Ochre-browed Thistletail almost the first bird we saw on descending from the bus. Just up the track a male Bearded Helmetcrest was feeding in a flowering eucalyptus tree, almost convincing David that there can be some merit in introduced vegetation occasionally (it was the first time he had seen a male Helmetcrest perched, let alone watched one through a 'scope). In the Santo Domingo valley a pair of Torrent Ducks thrilled everyone in the morning, while the in the afternoon that other quintessential Andean bird – Andean Cock-of-the-Rock – was seen well by everyone from the road, and then stunning views were had of them displaying by those who tackled the climb down the hillside to the lek.
Our visit to Hato El Cedral this year topped all our previous experiences there. Judy and David have always rated it as the most spectacular waterbird show in the world, but this year the numbers of birds present were two or three times greater than during previous visits. The sky was often black with clouds of literally thousands of White-faced and Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks, while the feeding concentrations of storks, herons and ibis had to be seen to be believed. Amongst the overwhelming throngs of birds we still managed to pick out most of the rarer specialities, and this year as well as Agami Heron and Pinnated Bittern, we saw two Zigzag Herons ('scope-filling views of one for 20 minutes), had Yellow-breasted Crakes and Azure Gallinules almost literally under the boat, and enjoyed not only Buff-breasted Sandpipers but also Uplands as well. For some though, even these avian highlights were eclipsed by the two Mountain Lions we watched for half-an-hour one evening – one sitting quietly in the shade of a tree watching the other consume a Capybara that it had presumably just killed.
Our final days in the coastal mountains of Henri Pittier National Park were spent exploring the few quieter trails in the park, as the roads were busy with Venezuelans commuting to and from the beach for their Easter celebrations. Away from the madding crowds, we enjoyed dancing Wire-tailed Manakins, gorgeous White-tipped Quetzals, literally breath-taking Handsome Fruiteaters, a splendid array of raptors including Solitary Eagle and two hawk-eagles, a really cute Moustached Puffbird, Venezuelan Wood-quails with two small chicks - and all this often to the serenade of Red Howler Monkeys – usually distant but at least once deafeningly close!” David Fisher.

The names used for the passerines follow The Birds of South America: Volumes 1 and 2 (1989 and 1994) by Robert S. Ridgely and Guy Tudor. During the tour we used some older names for some species that have been split by Ridgely and Tudor, so where there is potential for confusion footnotes have been added to clarify the postion.
