The Spanish Steppes are one of Europe’s most threatened yet special habitats for birds. This tour visits an area of Steppe rich in birds which supports one of the densest populations of Little Bustards in Europe. These remarkable birds are famously difficult to approach, a task made all the more difficult by the wide-open habitat they live in. However, strategically placed hides will allow us to get close to them at the height of their display with sweeping fields of poppies providing a dramatic backdrop.
David Tipling will be on hand to ensure you get the most out of your camera and each different situation. You can find out more about David and his photographs on his website www.davidtipling.com
Day 1: The tour begins at midday at Barcelona airport. There are various flight options for getting to Barcelona and those making their own travel arrangements can combine this short tour with a visit to this fascinating city either before or after the tour.
Once we are all together we'll transfer to out hotel for the next five nights. There should be time to explore the local area after arrrival and to prepare for the following day's photography. Night in Balaguer.
Days 2-5: There will be a variety of hides to use during our stay. We'll need to be in place very early, ideally just before dawn, and each day will be broken into two sessions. After a morning in the hides, we'll return to the hotel which is a short drive away to rest, relax and download our images.
As the light improves in the afternoon we'll venture out again, possibly to return to the hides or to see what we can find to photograph in the general area. Besides Little Bustards there will be a variety of other species to seek out. The region is good for Lesser Kestrels, Hobby, Roller and Calandra Lark among others, and some of these may well be attracted to the small drinking pools we hope to place some of the hides next to. Nights at Balaguer.
Day 6: After a final morning in the region, we'll transfer to Barcelona airport where the tour ends.
